Transportation Cabinet launches new online toolkit for understanding road designs

By Parry Barrows, Building Kentucky

As part of their commitment to public engagement, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently launched a new online resource to help Kentuckians better understand road designs.  The SAFERoad Solutions online guide is a one-stop shop for learning about road topics ranging from roundabouts to RCUTs to complete streets. In total, the guide covers 17 topics—each with a video, illustration, downloadable fact sheet and photos to help explain what each design is, where it is most effective and how to navigate it.

KYTC is committed to implementing safer, more efficient road designs across the state and several factors go in to determining what design fits best for a location.  Understanding the “why” behind building these new designs is essential to capturing public support. Many of the designs are also unfamiliar to the traveling public, which makes learning about them key to ensuring safe driving.  SAFERoad Solutions is an easily accessible resource that explains the “why” and familiarizes users with the new designs.

SAFERoad Solutions is also an innovative design in of itself.  Kentucky is one of the few states to host a robust online learning tool about road designs. KTYC can utilize the site and its resources for public meetings, presentations, general inquiries and more.
