Known for his ability to connect strategy with storytelling, Derek has led high-impact initiatives that shape public opinion, influence policy and deepen community engagement. With a career rooted in service and advocacy, he brings a passion for mission-driven work and a keen sense for coalition-building. 

As Senior Director, Derek leads a team of strategists who help clients stand out from the crowd and remove the guesswork from public relations, marketing and creative (and so much more) so they can focus on reaching their business goals. 

Before joining C2 Strategic Communications, Derek served as Director of Public Affairs for the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN), leading the organization’s government affairs, media relations and marketing/communications portfolios. Prior to MFAN, he was Communications Director for The Congressional Award Foundation, where he served as the national spokesperson and chief communications liaison for the United States Congress’ award program for youth. Derek has led campaigns that garnered earned media recognition in the Associated Press, CBS Evening News, CNN, Forbes, Fox, NPR, Reuters and more. He has shared research and subject matter expertise to inform transformational policy developments such as the Department of Defense’s “Taking Care of Our People” memorandums, the House Armed Services Committee Servicemember Quality of Life panel, and the White House Joining Forces initiative. 

Outside of his professional roles, Derek actively contributes to his community through volunteer efforts that promote inclusion, access and mentorship. Whether advocating for people with disabilities, supporting local creatives or guiding jobseekers through resume coaching, he invests in causes that build stronger, more connected communities. 

Derek holds a B.A. in International Relations from Roanoke College. He is a Henry H. Fowler Legacy Scholar in federal affairs and was named a Rotary Club Code of Ethics award winner. 

Derek and his wife, Julia, live in Louisville with their two children. In his down time, Derek can be found logging miles as an endurance runner or tackling the next DIY project around the house.
