A major bridge project between Kentucky and Indiana is still on track to begin next year. The COVID-19 pandemic has not changed the schedule of the $90+ million Sherman Minton Renewal.
Construction for the rehabilitation project is slated to take three years, starting in 2021. The 57-year-old bridge is in need of major rehabilitation and will be repainted. Bridge decks, structural steel elements and hangar cables will be replaced or refurbished to extend the life of the critically important bridge between the two states.
Feedback from public meetings including input on limiting traffic and necessary closures will be reflected in the project’s approach. While disruptions in traffic will be unavoidable for an infrastructure project of this size, full closures will be very limited throughout construction.
Submission of the Environmental documentation is expected in June and a Design-Build contractor will be selected this fall.
