Public, Private Sectors Join Forces For Economic Development
With the steady loss of coal jobs over the years, leaders in Eastern Kentucky are striving to build the workforce of tomorrow to bring good-paying jobs to the region. SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) is a bipartisan effort, launched in 2013 with a mission to create jobs and growth opportunities, as well as improve the quality of life in the 54-county region. The organization brings together educators and community/business leaders to help elevate Eastern Kentucky.
U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), in a blog post co-authored with a House Democrat from California, wrote: “SOAR has leveraged public and private funding to retrain the region’s workforce, spur entrepreneurship, invest in a statewide broadband infrastructure, improve tourism and agriculture, advance healthcare access and grow educational opportunities.”
