Lexington to get a professional soccer team in 2023

By Rachel Nix, Building Kentucky

Professional soccer continues to grow in the Commonwealth with a new addition – this time in Lexington.

The United Soccer League announced that a new USL League One expansion club is planned for the 2023 in the city of Lexington. The club is majority-owned by Tower Hill Sports and is slated to kick off its inaugural season in 2023.

This team joins Louisville City FC, a USL Championship League club, and Racing Louisville FC, a National Women’s Soccer League club, as pro soccer builds momentum in Kentucky.

About Lexington’s USL team

The club’s first season is expected to be played at a local collegiate facility, the details of which will be announced in the coming weeks.

The current USL League One regular season involves 12 teams playing 28 games over 30 weeks and concludes Oct. 30 with six teams qualifying for the playoffs.  In addition to Lexington, USL League One’s announced expansion markets over the next two seasons include Central Valley, Ca., Northern Colorado, and Spokane, Wash.

Lexington Pro Soccer will respond to the RFP for the High Street Development Project with the intent to construct a state-of-the-art, soccer-specific stadium at the site. The venue would be able to accommodate festivals, concerts, and other events, providing another entertainment option in downtown Lexington. The club is also exploring multiple locations in Fayette County that could become the site of the club’s training grounds and USL Academy program.

The new Lexington soccer club’s brand and crest will be developed and unveiled in the coming months with community residents and soccer fans playing a role in the process.

The club says it will conduct multiple focus groups, town hall sessions and workshops to gather ideas so that the club’s name, colors and marks reflect the energy, culture and diversity of the whole Lexington community.
