Illinois has a lot of bridges — third-most of any state, to be exact. As a result, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) recently announced that it’s developing a priority list of improvements needed to bridges across the state.
While funding hasn’t yet been identified, IDOT is looking to public-private partnerships as a source to fund the infrastructure improvements.
“At [IDOT], bridges are among our most expensive, complicated projects,” Illinois Secretary of Transportation Randy Blankenhorn said. “Because of that, we are becoming more focused than ever on viewing bridges and other key pieces of infrastructure as resources we must do our utmost to preserve and protect.”
IDOT is also creating a priority list for bridges that cross major waterways, including those connecting the state to Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky.
